{"id":776,"date":"2014-01-12T18:37:58","date_gmt":"2014-01-13T01:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/?p=776"},"modified":"2014-01-13T19:54:28","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T02:54:28","slug":"rhizomatic_pragmatism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/2014\/01\/12\/rhizomatic_pragmatism\/","title":{"rendered":"Rhizomatic Pragmatism &#8211; a Contradiction?"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>&#8220;When what&#8217;s on your cell phone is more important <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-782\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" alt=\"Google wins\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/google-trumps-teacher1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/google-trumps-teacher1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/google-trumps-teacher1-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/google-trumps-teacher1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>than what&#8217;s in the library, we&#8217;re challenged to say how do we do education differently, because if it&#8217;s about delivery of content, Google wins over teacher every day.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/yellowknife-parents-teachers-talk-education-renewal-1.2451853\">http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/yellowknife-parents-teachers-talk-education-renewal-1.2451853<br \/>\n<\/a>GNWT director of education renewal John Stewart addressing a December 2013 meeting of parents and educators in Yellowknife.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m really looking forward to Dave Cormier&#8217;s <a title=\"Rhizomatic Learning: The Community is the Curriculum\" href=\"https:\/\/p2pu.org\/en\/courses\/882\/rhizomatic-learning-the-community-is-the-curriculum\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rhisomatic Learning<\/a> &#8220;joining-in-with-me&#8221; (aka &#8220;course&#8221;) at P2PU.\u00a0 He begins with a question about, &#8220;&#8230;how we can learn in a world of abundance?&#8221; Cormier offers the wandering <a title=\"rhizomatic philosophy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhizome_%28philosophy%29\" target=\"_blank\">rhizome<\/a> as a metaphor for learning via a connectivist community, contrasting it with the tree &#8211; a metaphor for learning from monolithic authority.<\/p>\n<p>The learners to whom I am responsible are not in Higher Education.\u00a0 They never got there because the system was unable to accommodate their different way of learning.\u00a0 Cormier proposes that we might be brave and decide that &#8220;<a title=\"rhizomatic learning - about\" href=\"https:\/\/p2pu.org\/en\/courses\/882\/rhizomatic-learning-the-community-is-the-curriculum\/\" target=\"_blank\">important learning is more like being a parent, or a cook than (memorizing a bunch of out-0f-context facts)<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>This leaves me grappling with some pragmatic questions\/issues (while questioning whether &#8220;pragmatic&#8221; contradicts or complements &#8220;rhizomatic&#8221; learning):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How might this apply to my world of remedial adult education?<\/li>\n<li>What could Adult Literacy &amp; Basic Education look like in a world of abundance?<\/li>\n<li>How may people who are living with brain injuries and trauma participate in the feast of information and knowledge available?<\/li>\n<li>How will they know that they are learning when it doesn&#8217;t look like &#8220;school work&#8221;?<\/li>\n<li>What venue is available for them to tell their stories of struggle, hope, and disappointment?<\/li>\n<li>Who cares about what they offer to society?<\/li>\n<li>Dare I attempt to break with the education-by-authority model that has failed my students and try drawing them into an inter-connected learning community.<\/li>\n<li>And where will I find a compatible community for them to connect to?<\/li>\n<li>Or should I be reckless enough to try helping them form a community to which others will feel comfortable joining?<\/li>\n<li>Is my use of &#8220;helping&#8221; a subconscious condescension?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are not entirely new thoughts or questions prompted only by the upcoming course.\u00a0 My students have been posting their creations to YouTube, SoundCloud, StudyStack, and of course Facebook.\u00a0 It seems to be going in the right direction, but frustrating to measure by traditional assessments.
