Escher.\u00a0 The fact that the two were mathematically related totally escaped me until recently.\u00a0 I do OK with basic arithmetic, but quickly get lost when they start mixing non-Roman script with the variables.\u00a0 So I approached the <a title=\"VizMath cMOOC\" href=\"http:\/\/math.cdlprojects.com\/outline.htm\" target=\"_blank\">VizMath<\/a> MOOC with an expectation that I was going to be totally lost.\u00a0 I am lost, but wander in amazement at the genius and the beauty.\u00a0 I am not particularly worried about finding my way.<\/p>\n<p>Daina Taimina&#8217;s <a title=\"Google search hyperbolic crochet images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/search?q=daina+taimina+hyperbolic+crochet&amp;hl=en&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;hs=ymJ&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;prmd=imvnso&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=mRqsUJGGCsWfiALwzoGABw&amp;ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&amp;biw=1920&amp;bih=872\" target=\"_blank\">crocheted creations<\/a> are a good example.\u00a0 While not even pretending to understand how these might represent (or fail to represent) the shape of the universe, they drew me in, made me believe I might copy them, if never understand them.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until she showed us the rough approximations of her work in hexagons though, that I found my inspiration to act &#8211; and blog.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_582\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-582\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-582\" title=\"scissors &amp; tape\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/scissors-tape-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/scissors-tape-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/scissors-tape-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/scissors-tape.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">positive vs. negative curvature<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In an attempt to share some of the wonder with my ABE math students, I created a sheet of pentagons, hexagons, and heptagons to cut out and tape together.\u00a0 There are enough polygons on one sheet to make a complete circle of both curved and negatively curved (hyperbolic) planes.\u00a0 Extension of the planes, either to a complete sphere or complete insanity will require additional sheets, and probably collaborative effort.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"download polygons worksheet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/testfile\/polygons%2015h6p8s.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-575\" title=\"polygons\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/polygons-tiling-15h6p8s-116x150.jpg\" alt=\"download link\" width=\"116\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/polygons-tiling-15h6p8s-116x150.jpg 116w, https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/polygons-tiling-15h6p8s-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/www.wayupnorth.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/polygons-tiling-15h6p8s.jpg 471w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 116px) 100vw, 116px\" \/><\/a>Click the image at the left to download a PDF version of my worksheet.<\/p>\n<p>(And yes, I do know there are extra hexagons.
